Joseph Colombo – Man of the Year, Target of the Mob

The saga of New York’s underworld continues with the second installment in the Five Families series — this time honoring one of the most controversial and public-facing Mafia bosses in American history: Joseph Colombo.

The reverse design presents Colombo in his most defining moment — seated at his desk, headline in hand, reading of his own recognition as Man of the Year by the Tri-Boro Post. The scene is surrounded by the symbols of his cause: Italian and American flags behind him, and on his desk, authentic pamphlets and documents from the Italian-American Civil Rights League, the organization he founded in 1970 to fight discrimination — and arguably, to shield himself and the Mafia from increasing federal scrutiny.

The 10 of Spades anchors the card's background, cleverly nodding to the “royal flush” motif that unites the Five Families series. Three of the spades are cracked by bullets — referencing the 1971 assassination attempt that left Colombo paralyzed. The image captures a moment of pride under the shadow of inevitable consequence — a design full of coded meaning, personal ambition, and violent history.

The obverse features the shared playing card back for the series — a dark tapestry of gold-gilded bullet holes and symbols of organized crime: firearms, cash, narcotics, poker chips. Each bullet hole represents one of the Five Families, tying all entries into a single criminal dynasty. The official seal of Niue confirms its status as legal tender.

Issued in 2026 by Niue, this antiqued high relief 2 oz pure silver coin, measures 43 x 60 mm, finished with selective coloring and gold-gilded accents, is limited to just 500 pieces worldwide. Each coin comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity and custom packaging box, ideal for numismatists, true crime collectors, and aficionados of Mafia history.

Stay tuned as the Five Families series continues to build toward the ultimate Royal Flush.
