Ascalon – The Blade of the Dragon Slayer
The legend of Saint George and the Dragon is one of Christianity's most enduring stories—a fearless warrior, a terrorizing beast, a princess saved, and a kingdom converted to faith. At the heart of it: Ascalon, the blade George used to deal the killing blow. While countless depictions show him charging on horseback with a lance, it is Ascalon—his sword—that delivered the dragon's end.
George was a Roman officer martyred for his faith in 303 AD, his legend carried across Europe by the Crusades until he became patron saint of England, Georgia, Portugal, and beyond. The dragon is not merely a monster—it is evil, paganism, and everything that opposes the divine. George's victory is faith triumphing over darkness.
This 1 oz .999 silver coin is Spectres' original creative interpretation of that legend, built with deep reverence for Catholic and Christian iconography.
The obverse opens at the pommel with a circle bearing the cross—faith crowning the blade. The handle depicts Saint George himself, armored and resolute, standing triumphant atop the fallen dragon whose outstretched wings form the sword guard. Below, a white dove emerges near the guard—the Holy Spirit, bearing witness. The blade descends into breathtaking Gothic Catholic architecture: pointed arches, tracery, and rose window motifs drawn from the great medieval churches and cathedrals of Europe, rendered in razor-sharp relief.
The reverse continues the narrative. The pommel bears the coat of arms of Samoa—a Christian nation whose own flag carries the cross, a fitting sovereign for this sacred piece. The handle reveals the princess shielded behind Saint George, her deliverance the very purpose of his valor. The dragon's tail coils around the guard, the defeated beast immortalized in silver. Down the blade, Gothic architectural details continue—crosses, cathedral columns, and lancet window patterns—with Saint George's rearing horse set amongst the architecture in the middle of the blade.
