About the Piece
At the end of the 19th century, San Francisco mechanic Charles Fey helped establish the machine that modern slot players would still recognize immediately. His Liberty Bell used three reels, an automatic payout and a set of simple symbols culminating in the bell itself. The format proved so successful that it became the model for generations of mechanical slot machines that followed.
Spectres recreates the machine as a shaped silver coin, preserving the upright cabinet, three-reel window, side lever, pay table and the LIBERTY BELL nameplate across the top. The tiny payout instructions are part of what makes the object convincing: this is not simply a bell surrounded by casino imagery, but the machine whose mechanical language became the language of the slot.
The edition is limited to 777 pieces. Here the number needs little explanation — three sevens became one of gambling’s most recognizable shorthand symbols for a jackpot, carrying the language of the casino from the machine into the edition itself.

How is this a coin?
- A coin is defined by its official issuance, not by its physical shape. This piece is formally issued as legal tender by a sovereign issuing authority, with an official denomination and year of issue.
- Money and coinage have also taken unconventional forms throughout history, including ancient Chinese knife- and spade-shaped money. Spectres continues that idea in modern legal tender, where a coin may be round, shaped, functional, sculptural or fully three-dimensional.
